A dying art. A new stage.

Growing up in Mumbai, East Asian visual culture wasn't part of my world. But in 2015, an exchange semester in Taipei changed everything.

My Mandarin teacher in Taipei was a master calligrapher. He was extraordinary at it - years of discipline and devotion poured into every stroke. But calligraphy, as an art form, was dying and work was limited. So he did what he could - he taught Mandarin to students instead.

An art form thousands of years old was disappearing and something had to be done about it.

HEI Studio was born from that moment - a visual language centuries in the making, reinterpreted through a contemporary lens.
