Calligraphy scroll on a stone wall — HEI Studio

Great change begins within

Originating from The Great Learning (大學), this Confucian maxim presents a timeless progression: cultivate the self, bring harmony to the home, and only then seek to shape the world beyond it.

The Story — 故事

A dying art. A new stage.

Growing up in Mumbai, East Asian visual culture wasn't part of my world. In 2015, an exchange semester in Taipei changed that.

My Mandarin teacher there was a master calligrapher - the real kind. Decades of discipline distilled into every single stroke. He was extraordinary. And yet, there was no place left for that extraordinariness. Calligraphy, as an art form, was dying. The work simply wasn't there anymore. So, he did the only thing he could - he set the brush aside, and taught Mandarin to students like me instead.

An art form thousands of years old, quietly disappearing. Something had to be done about that.

HEI Studio was born from that moment - a canvas for a visual language centuries in the making.
